Pleuger featured in Eureka Flash Info: Driving Offshore Energy Storage with the StEnSea Project
Pleuger featured in Eureka Flash Info for role in the StEnSea project
Hamburg, September 2025 – Pleuger appears in the French magazine Eureka Flash Info. The feature highlights Pleuger’s work on the StEnSea (Stored Energy in the Sea) project, which explores new ways to store renewable energy offshore.
International teamwork drives the project
Germany and the United States support StEnSea through government programs. Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel and Sperra in the U.S. lead the project with their expertise in energy research and subsea sphere technology. Together with Pleuger, the partners aim to create reliable offshore energy storage.
How the system works
Pleuger’s submersible pumps sit at the heart of the project. They move water in and out of hollow spheres placed 600–800 meters under the sea. When wind farms generate excess power, the pumps push water out of the spheres. Later, when the grid needs extra electricity, the water flows back in, driving the pumps in reverse to release power.
This process balances supply and demand. In addition, it reduces environmental impact and offers a cleaner alternative to conventional storage methods.
Pleuger’s contribution to renewables
Sebastian Rose, Engineering Manager at Pleuger Industries, explains:
“StEnSea shows Pleuger’s commitment to renewable energy. Our pump technology, combined with the knowledge of Fraunhofer IEE and Sperra, helps shape the future of offshore energy storage.”
Recognition in Europe
The article in Eureka Flash Info expands Pleuger’s presence in France and across Europe. Moreover, it underlines the company’s role in the global shift toward renewable energy and sustainable technology.
