Delivering vital water across arid lands.
Beneath the deserts of southern Jordan and northwestern Saudi Arabia lies the Disi aquifer. This aquifer is a vast underground reservoir stretching 320 kilometers and situated 500 meters below ground.
From 55 wells tapping into this aquifer, potable water is transported over 325 kilometers to Amman, Jordan’s capital, and other cities along the pipeline. Ensuring the reliability and efficiency of this extensive pumping system is crucial for sustaining the water supply to these urban centers.
PLEUGER’s comprehensive approach.
Since the commissioning of the well field, PLEUGER has collaborated closely with both the operator and the owner to enhance the performance and dependability of the aquifer’s pumping infrastructure. Through a series of targeted initiatives, PLEUGER has addressed key operational challenges:
- Pump upgrades: Implementation of heavy-duty thrust bearings to bolster performance and reliability.
- Seal enhancements: Introduction of advanced material designs to extend the lifespan of mechanical seals.
In partnership with the operator, PLEUGER contributed to the development of a Wellfield Network Hydraulic Model. This model provided valuable insights into optimizing pump and well field operations by:
- Refining procedures: Analyzing and simulating start-stop sequences to propose new methods aimed at minimizing equipment stress and water hammer effects.
- Optimizing settings: Testing various scenarios for adjusting orifice plate settings at pump discharge points, considering the entire hydraulic system’s response. These tests were combined with simulations of pump stage adjustments to identify long-term strategies that achieve the lowest specific energy consumption for water extraction.
Innovative monitoring for proactive maintenance.
Recognizing the importance of innovation, PLEUGER and the operator have explored advancements in pump monitoring to preempt performance declines. Discussions have focused on integrating new sensors capable of monitoring vibration and conductivity, which can detect bearing wear and environmental water ingress. This enhanced visibility facilitates proactive maintenance scheduling, reduces downtime, and increases overall system reliability.
Impact and future outlook.
Through its ongoing collaboration with the Disi aquifer’s stakeholders, PLEUGER has significantly improved the efficiency and reliability of a critical water supply system serving Jordan’s major cities.
By implementing technical upgrades and embracing innovative monitoring solutions, PLEUGER ensures the sustained performance of the aquifer’s pumping infrastructure. As water demands continue to rise in arid regions, PLEUGER remains committed to delivering engineering excellence that supports essential water distribution networks.
