Industry: Water / Municipal.
Location: Libya.
Client: Great Man-Made River Project Authority.
In the vast, arid expanse of Libya, a bold vision to bring freshwater to one of the world’s most water-scarce regions.
The Great Man-Made River (GMR), the largest irrigation project on Earth, sought to revolutionize water access, supplying 70% of Libya’s freshwater needs.
This monumental project required an engineering solution as ambitious as the vision itself. In 2001, PLEUGER stepped in to help make that vision a reality.
A colossal undertaking.
The scale of the Great Man-Made River project is almost unimaginable. It is the largest underground network of pipes (2,820 kilometres (1,750 mi)) and aqueducts in the world. It consists of more than 1,300 wells, most more than 500m drilled deep into the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, and through an intricate network of pumping stations, supplies 6,500,000 m3 of fresh water per day to the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi, Sirte and elsewhere in Libya.
PLEUGER was to provide hundreds of high-performance pumps capable of sustaining the correct flow rates. Every pump was meticulously engineered to meet the project’s unique demands. With a focus on reliability and efficiency, PLEUGER delivered pumps of uniform size, designed for seamless integration across the system. To ensure flawless operation, extensive testing was conducted on specialized rigs – a testament to the project’s extraordinary scope and PLEUGER’s commitment to quality.

A decade of interrupted.
For years, the Great Man-Made River transformed life in Libya. Vast stretches of farmland flourished in the desert, communities gained access to reliable water supplies, and the nation benefited from improved food security and economic stability.
However, during the Libyan Civil War, the infrastructure faced significant challenges. Equipment was broken, damaged, or lost altogether, disrupting the system’s ability to serve its people. Among the casualties were the pumps that PLEUGER had supplied, underscoring the vulnerability of critical infrastructure during conflict.
Engineering a path forward.
Despite the setbacks, the Great Man-Made River remains a remarkable example of engineering ambition and capability. PLEUGER’s contribution to the project highlights the importance of reliable and scalable solutions in achieving such complex goals. The pumps supplied in 2001 played a vital role in enabling the system to function effectively, supporting Libya’s efforts to improve water access and agricultural productivity.
As Libya rebuilds, the lessons learned from the GMR’s challenges and achievements continue to guide recovery efforts. The focus remains on restoring and enhancing the system to ensure it can meet future demands.
A commitment to innovation.
PLEUGER’s role in the Great Man-Made River project reflects a dedication to practical and impactful engineering solutions. From the precision of its pumps to the collaboration with project teams, PLEUGER contributed to one of the most ambitious water infrastructure initiatives ever undertaken.
